Product Description
A French antique stone wellhead of the 19th century with a round opening of generous size and the balanced proportions of a piece cut to be looked at as much as used. The limestone has aged outdoors to a soft gray, the texture open and lightly pitted, the rim worn smooth where rope and hands have crossed it. There is no ornament; its presence comes from mass and proportion.
It measures 34 1/2 inches across in each direction and 22 1/2 inches high, with an opening of 27 1/4 inches. That leaves walls of around three and a half inches, slimmer than many of our well heads, and a hollow large enough for a serious planting. Condition is as found, weathered, with the small chips and staining expected of an antique wellhead that has stood outside for well over a century.
It belongs in a traditional garden or a courtyard where it can sit on gravel among clipped greenery, hold a single olive or lemon, or carry a low jet as a fountain. It also works as a terminal feature at the end of a path, with a hedge behind it. The stone wellhead is in Marina Del Rey; come and see it by appointment, or ask us to send current photographs and a delivered price.
